We have followed the forgotten footprints a long way.

Some were faint, almost erased by time. Others led to writers once well known, whose books survived even as their names slowly slipped from view. Along the way, we met detectives, rediscovered cases and brought a few authors back into the light.

But our trail is not quite finished.

One last set of footprints leads away from the path and up the drive of a country manor.

It is evening. Lights glow warmly from the windows. Cars are arriving at the entrance, and somewhere inside, music is playing. Whatever is happening here, we appear to have arrived just in time.

We follow the footprints to the door.

And discover a small complication.

It is a masked ball.

Inside, the rooms are crowded with writers — or at least, we assume they are writers. Everyone is hiding behind a mask, and the names on the invitations may not be any more reliable than the faces beneath them.

Until now, we have been searching for authors whose footprints faded.

These authors present a different problem.

They hid in plain sight.

Some chose another name and made it famous. Some needed more than one. Sometimes two people stood behind a single identity; sometimes a single writer appeared on the shelves under several. In the world of detective fiction, even the author’s name can become part of the mystery.

So our investigation changes.

We are no longer following fading footprints.

We are looking behind the masks.

Welcome to The Authors Behind the Name.

The guests have arrived.

Let the unmasking begin.
